STURGILL SIMPSON (feat. Willie Nelson) Juanita

Sturgill Simpson Jaunita is available on The Ballad of Dood & Juanita

by Walter Price

If you know, you already know that Sturgill Simpson’s dramatic Civil War epic ‘The Ballad of Dood & Juanita’ harkens back to the glory days of storied works by Marty Robbins, Lefty Frizzell, Merle & Willie, and the like. So when I randomly heard the somewhat deep-cut “Juanita” (feat. Willie Nelson) in a German gas station, I had to go back and revisit the 2021 album in full and share this particular chapter.

Of course, in tone and style, “Juanita” is comparable to Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson’s “Pancho and Lefty” and, perhaps, that’s the exact reason Simpson invited Nelson to trade lines and riffs on this tale of a soldier pondering under a big open sky, sickly and homesick and feeling death a-knockin’. The only thing keeping this man alive is his love for—-Juanita. Palpable.

I’m caught up in fever
And shivering too
All that’s keeping me alive
Is the thought of losing you
Juanita, when I found you I was at my end
So hold on Juanita, I’ll find you again.
..

Spanish and folk collide on this particular track and you’d be foolish not to utilize this song as a gateway to start at the start of this “a simple tale of either redemption or revenge” —‘The Ballad of Dood & Juanita‘.

You can stream “Juanita”, here at the GTC.
