Spray Painting Poet Brings Positive Art to the Streets

While her friends and family know her as Kimberly Brown, this innovative artist and poet is known as Boots in Chicago and other arts communities. Throughout her creative journey, she has spray painted her poetry in 34 states.

Boots has a strong following on social media. If you’d like to learn more about her and the artwork, follow her on Instagram @poetrybyboots.

“Every day, I get about 200 tags of the sidewalk sprays or messages,” Boots said.

While there is a demand for her artwork and poetry now, things were different in the beginning.

“I never really started writing it until I went through the trauma of a breakup, and then I just decided, lets try to express this the best we can and try to get these emotions out, and it just kind of flowed out of me.”

Boots turned a difficult situation into something creative and positive that has inspired thousands of people around the world.

“Someone wrote me recently and told me that my book and seeing my sidewalk sprays was like their bible in rehab. That stuff is so empowering to my journey, knowing that just a simple stencil on the sidewalk can truly impact people’s lives,” Boots added.

In addition to her street art she is also the author of two books entitled Cancun and Fury.

Boots explained her ultimate goal is to inspire others: “I realized how therapeutic it was for me, but it also helps me let people know that they’re also not alone.”
