Sophie Taeuber-Arp was a Switzerland-born artist, designer, and one of the abstraction pioneers in the 1920s-30s. She has a wide oeuvre of artworks, from embroideries, painting, carved sculptures, puppets, to interior design.
Composition of Circles and Overlapping Angles (1930) was painted by Sophie Taeuber-Arp. It consists of overlapping geometric forms, like circles and squares. She played with color and form to create a contrast between the objects, but also a unity at the same time.
Taeuber-Arp often combined traditional medium with modernist abstraction, including in this composition. She defied the boundaries between applied and fine art. She was also one of the founders of the Dada movement that arose as a response to World War I and opposition to all norms of bourgeois culture.
Taeuber-Arp’s artworks questioned the traditional norms in art and society. As part of the Dada movement, she integrated art and everyday life matter. She is very impressive at creating beauty from daily life elements.
This year, Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s Living Abstraction exhibition will travel to Tate Modern, London, 15 July to 17 October 2021 and Museum of Modern Art, New York, 21 November 2021 to 12 March 2022.
