The Knack was known as one of those ‘hard-edged’ early 70s rock bands that disbanded in the early 80s. They were widely known for their biggest hit, “My Sharona” a catchy pre-80s rock tune off their only album, Get The Knack written about lead-guitarist-singer Doug Fieger’s then-girlfriend, Sharona Alperin. Alperin is currently a real estate agent in Los Angeles. They met when he was 25 and she was only 17. The two stayed together for four years. They eventually broke up and married other people but remained friends. Doug co-wrote the song with guitarist Berton Averre.
After “My Sharona’s” release, several parodies about it have been written; including one relating to the coronavirus appropriately titled, “My Corona!”

Sadly, Fieger; a Detroit native, passed away in Woodland Hills, California on February 14, 2010 (Valentine’s Day) at only 57-years-old of cancer. He was a talented rock legend. RIP.

Their second hit, off Get The Knack was “Good Girls Don’t”. It wasn’t as massive a hit as “My Sharona” was but still very popular.
“My Sharona” was so popular during that era that radio stations in their prime would play it non-stop! Fans called into radio stations all over the country to request it. It brings back so many memories for me growing up in that time period. The first time I remember hearing it was when I was brought in with my mother at the radio station she worked for at the time. She was a talk show host for WVOX in New Rochelle, New York. The event was for Take Your Daughters to Work Day.
I continually played that song in my room over and over again until I wore out the record! I’m still obsessed with it today!
