iCarly was ahead of its time in certain aspects. For example, the show depicted the main character as having a vlog that she would make content and publish for each episode. When the original show was on the air, many internet users were blogging but it wasn’t as popular to vlog consistently back then. This gave the show a futuristic vibe.

Producers got together during the Covid-19 pandemic and made plans to bring this popular show back to either TV or streaming services. Leading actress Miranda Cosgrove is set to make a return for the reboot, while actress Jennette McCurdy will not be returning.

MuCurdy is not returning because she is doing important work with a podcast and content creation on mental health. Instead of reprising a role, she feels that television is not the correct place for her to be right now. She has plenty of TV experience, particularly in the original iCarly and its spin-off Sam & Cat, but she is enjoying helping people right now and does not want to stop her efforts.

“She’s decided to move on and we’re super proud of her and super happy for her and we miss her,” said actor Jerry Trainor. “She’s very much a part of our family in this world.”

Even though the show is loosing one of its main characters, Trainor sees this as an opportunity for the show. “It has given us the space to introduce new characters,” Jerry said, “to have new voices, and to go in I think directions that are unexpected and might be welcome.”

The iCarly reboot premiered on June 17th on Paramount Plus. New episodes release on Thursdays.
