Chris Crewe is an artist who creates installation pieces as well as art on canvas. He specializes in painting, digital art, conceptual, mixed media, pop art and urban art. One of the artist’s methods is to create a perfect image with a piece of it missing or destroyed in order to make creative statements within the art.
In Smash Face Clown #4 the artist depicts a clown wearing a suit complete with a bow tie and a flower water shooter. The subject’s expression is one of sadness and perseverance. The otherwise perfect image has been changed by what appears to be an injury to his left eye, which is slammed with an imprint of paint that looks somewhat like an image of the earth taken from a satellite in space. The clown’s runny nose symbolizes sadness and his half-crooked smile suggests that he is in a difficult situation but has the intention of returning back to his happiness.
The artist has many creative works like this one where there is a strong splatter of various paints that change images in order to make social commentary about them.
This clever technique provides an extra layer in which observers can analyze images from at least two different perspectives.
