PlayMakers Laboratory Celebrates 25 Years

PlayMakers Laboratory actors have begun rehearsals for their benefit fundraiser, a play written by a student at Dixon Elementary School entitled Don and the Three Mimes. Taylor Galloway is one of the principals in the show and one of the play’s scenes is an adaptation of her story.

“I worked with her and she was hysterical,” says Brandon Cloyd, PlayMakers Laboratory executive artistic director. “And so we knew we had to put in some music and some groove in there and she loved it.”

Over the past 25 years, PlayMakers Laboratory has hosted six-week residencies at dozens of Chicago Public Schools, helping students workshop original plays and performing them.

“I think we really try to empower them to tell their stories,” says actor Noah Appel “…and to show that all of their ideas are good ideas and to have the confidence to produce their own art and their own writing.”

PlayMakers Laboratory is celebrating its 25th anniversary with two fundraising shows at The Neo-Futurists Theater-proceeds benefit their arts education initiatives.
