Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Turns Buzz into a Real Astronaut

Disney and Pixar are using their collective creative imaginations in order to create a prequel that features the origin story of Buzz Lightyear before he became a popular toy in the Toy Story movie franchise. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters June 17, 2022. Disney and Pixar have also released a 90-second trailer of the film.

“In the Toy Story universe, [Lightyear] would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure,” MacLane explains to EW according to ArsTechnica. In other words: it’s as if the Michael Keaton version of Batman came before the campier Adam West turn (also, if supersonic, interstellar space travel exists on Andy’s Earth, it has yet to be chronicled with definitive logic and science by Disney Pixar. We’ll keep waiting for that spinoff.)”

It was rumored that the film would feature a live action version of Buzz Lightyear’s story. However, the trailer depicts the characters in animation but not as the toys from the Toy Story movies. This is an interesting move by the two film companies. Buzz is a fan-favorite from Toy Story and many viewers would be interested in his backstory. If the plot is significant, and Pixar can deliver stellar animation then this project could go exceptionally well. Disney has already confirmed the 2022 release of the film in theaters. As of right now, there are no plans to launch the movie on Disney+. If the world is still dealing with a pandemic around the release date then it is almost certain that Disney will launch it on its streaming service.
