Notes #1: A Social Media Website Turns Into Digital Media

I created an online social network for artists in 2008. It was regularly updated until about 2016 and was still live on the internet until about 2019.

We reached millions of visitors and shared a lot of content.

The initial goal was to be a place where users can find resources such as information on auditions and jobs. These tools were available to a global audience.

A few years later, things started to change on the internet. Digital media was on the rise and companies like BuzzFeed and others who produced shareable, journalistic content were increasing in popularity. I began making similar content for the social media platform around 2012.

Arts Tribune was launched shortly before the global pandemic, a time in which the world was having difficulties and people needed to stay home. We gained many new readers during this time. Arts Tribune became the 60,000th most popular website in the world. However, the numbers are not the same anymore and it raises the question: should we continue to pursue digital media in this way?
