For budding artists, building an audience is often challenging. So is building the confidence to perform in front of a live audience — or online. Dominican-American artist Jasmine Wesley has to overcome such challenges in order to pursue her dreams.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan-raised singer-songwriter started out performing in cafés in Los Angeles, where she is currently based. As time progressed, she not only strengthened her vocal ability, but also got to muster enough courage to venture into music full-time. With a voice as beautiful as her looks, Jasmine regularly engages fans with song covers that she posts on streaming platforms and on social media.
Wesley’s new EP, Nostalgia EP, includes 5 gorgeous renditions of some of the classic songs that have helped shape her as an artist. It also showcases her growth as a person, with the singer having had to confront issues like self-doubt. Listeners are captivated by her captivating acoustic style, which is influenced by her Latin heritage.
“‘Nostalgia’ is all about looking back at where it all started, celebrating the moments my community and I have shared, and honoring the music that has shaped my growth. It’s a reflection of how far I’ve come, and a way to remember the magic we’ve created together,” the artist comments.
The first track is a reimagination of “Just the Two of Us”, the classic song penned by Bill Withers, William Salter, and Ralph MacDonald. It is melodious and heart-warming. Jasmine’s dulcet tone is further exhibited on the second track, “Bésame mucho”. This one was originally recorded in 1940 by legendary Mexican pianist/composer Consuelito Velázquez. The new version manages to transport listeners back to that vintage era.
“Disfruto” is a solemn and passionate song dressed as an indie-alternative pop tune. It is just as evocative as Carla Morrison’s original. The mood switches dramatically on the next track, “No Me Queda Más“, a classic piece written by Ricky Vela, the keyboardist of the band Selena. “No Me Queda Más” is touchingly poignant.
Closing the EP is Jasmine’s cover of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds”. Like some of the other songs on this project, she changed a couple of lines into Spanish. The lyric Cada situación puede mejorar (meaning ‘every situation can change’) is especially profound, reflecting the uplifting nature of “Three Little Birds”. This song is indeed a perfect way to conclude the EP.
