NBA YoungBoy is now facing a new federal gun case just as his old one is winding up.
On Monday (August 19), NBA (real name Kentrell Gaulden) was charged in U.S. District Court in Utah with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He is accused of possessing a Sig Sauer P365 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The gun is illegal for anyone who has “previously been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year,” the prosecutor clarified.
According to authorities, the weapon was found on April 16 of this year, which is when Gaulden was arrested on numerous state charges related to his alleged involvement in a prescription drug ring.
During that arrest, multiple agencies, including the FBI, searched his Utah home.
This new charge comes just days after Gaulden agreed to plead guilty in a different federal gun case, this one from Louisiana.
That earlier gun possession case dates back to 2020, when YoungBoy was caught carrying a gun while filming a music video in his hometown of Baton Rouge.
The case was originally going to be heard in Louisiana, but after YoungBoy agreed in writing to plead guilty to firearms possession, the court has moved it to Utah, where the rapper faces drug fraud charges from the aforementioned April arrest — as well as this new federal gun charge.
The alleged prescription drug fraud scheme worked like this, according to an affidavit: “A suspect calls in a prescription, claiming the identity of a real doctor and using a fraudulent patient name and birthday, all for Promethazine with Codeine. Sometime after the prescriptions are called in, they are filled and picked up by [YoungBoy and/or people referred to as ‘Known Associates’ 1 and 2].”
The rapper even allegedly impersonated a doctor during the scheme but raised suspicion when he used the word “axed” instead of “asked.”
In the case, YoungBoy was originally charged with 63 counts relating to identity fraud, forgery, obtaining a prescription under false pretenses, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, a pattern of unlawful activity and possession of a controlled substance.
He later had more charges added to his sheet including possession of a firearm by a restricted person and two counts of obtaining a prescription without permission, according to KUTV.
