Mr. Corman is a new series that has been created by Joseph Gordon-Levitt that has been released on AppleTV+. The only way to describe this series would be as a strange creative trip about the life of a 5th grade teacher, who seems to crave more from existence and everyday life.
Josh Corman (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) seems to enjoy his job, it provides satisfaction, but traveling from home work, he has a vision, the sight of a homeless man, and then there is a shift. Instead of being content with his life and evenings at home playing computer games with his flatmates.
Suddenly he is wanting more, wanting to seek out adventure, some fun. Departing the apartment he is on a quest to shake up his world. Meet some new people and also help his Mom home from a bar, as she is clearly in need of some assistance as she can barely walk straight.
Mr. Corman is not what I expected, at all.
This series examines how people appear to have it all together and can quickly shake things up and how they seem to suddenly fall apart. With just a quick change of direction it can prompt anxiety and panic attacks and people seem to no longer cope but also don’t want to go back to their previous existence, it’s a very curious series to watch unfold in each episode.
Created by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is known for doing work that will challenge this audience. Mr. Corman does exactly that. It is a different take on the world and a 5th grade teacher’s view of it, but also how things can change so quickly in life, with very little effort. This will make you think about your place in the world and how happy are you with your choices.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Josh is perfect in the role. He is well suited at playing a neurotic individual who is slowly falling apart. Obviously as he created this role for himself to play, he has jumped in head first and is absolutely captivating.
Arturo Castro as Victor, Josh’s flatmate, is a good choice. He is what you would have expected to bounce off the interesting dynamic between Victor and Josh as they live together. When first introduced to Victor and Josh eating on the couch you couldn’t quite figure out if they were in a relationship, friends or flatmates, but as the scene progressed it became apparent they were flatmates. Arturo is great in the role.
Stand out for me and nice surprise to see returning to the screen is Debra Winger as Ruth Corman, Josh’s Mom. She is just such a strong actor. Her first scene is the drunk Mom stumbling to the car. It was a joy seeing her in the role and wish she had more screen time in this series.
Mr. Corman is not your average TV series. It is a little out there, a little challenging and a little obscure, but it is also thought provoking, engaging and you are left wanting to know more out of curiosity.
