‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ Wins 10 Tony Awards

Before discussing the big night of the musical, it is important to pinpoint how The Tony Awards 2021 made reference to the COVID-19 pandemic. While many people in the Arts, Entertainment and Recreation field have been adversely affected by the pandemic, it can be asserted that the medium of theatre may have been affected the most. When Broadway shutdown along with all the other play houses in New York and other arts districts throughout the United States, theatre had to close its curtains and lock its doors. It has been reported by two writers of Arts Tribune that Broadway is slowly reopening and is currently putting on shows. The Tony Awards 2021 made sure that people know that the show must go on.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical had an exceptional night at the Tony Awards. The production won 10 awards, nearly tying the record of 12 set by a production of The Producers.

Moulin Rouge! Featured contemporary music that resonated well with fans. It included famous songs like “Single Ladies”, “Firework”, and “Lady Marmalade”. Theatre is one of those mediums where directors can introduce new ideas to existing pieces of art, which can entertain existing and new audiences alike.

The Inheritance by Matthew Lopez won best new play. In his acceptance speech he spoke regarding the need for the development of more plays that address the experiences of the Latino community.  

 Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play won best play revival.

Moulin Rouge! Won for scenic design, lighting, costume, sound design, orchestrations and a featured acting Tony for Danny Burstein. Sonya Tayeh won for choreography, and Alex Timbers for best direction of a musical.
