More Seasons of ‘Fargo’ Are a “Matter of Timing”

Fans of FX’s acclaimed Fargo anthology series may have to let the just-completed fifth season of the series tide them over for a while. Creator Noah Hawley is currently working on FX’s upcoming Alien series, and there is no timeline for Fargo’s return. As reported by Collider’s Carly Lane-Perry, FX chairman John Landgraf stated that new seasons of Fargo are “a matter of timing” as part of his executive session at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 Winter Press Tour. Hawley is, in fact, off to Thailand to film the science fiction horror series, so there’s no telling when he’ll return to the icy Midwest (or its filming location stand-in of Alberta, Canada) to make more Fargo.

The fifth season of Fargo, which concluded last month, is not intended to be the end for the series. Producer Warren Littlefield told Collider’s Christina Radish that while he originally anticipated that the fifth season would be the series’ swan song, he came to believe otherwise: “We rolled up to this year, Season 5, and there was very much a feeling that this would be the end and we approached it that way, but I don’t think it is.” Landgraf, for his part, also says that while Alien is Hawley’s priority, “I’d be thrilled to see more” of Fargo. The series has certainly had lengthy hiatuses between seasons; while the first three seasons of the series came out in a span of four years, season four premiered over three years after the conclusion of season three, and season five took another three years to come out.

What Happened in the Last Season of ‘Fargo’?

Last season of Fargo centered around unassuming Minnesota housewife Dot Lyon (Juno Temple), whose cheery exterior hides a dark secret; she is the fugitive wife of authoritarian North Dakota sheriff Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm). When Tillman finds her, chaos ensues, with Dot’s billionaire mother-in-law Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Roy’s son/henchman Gator (Joe Keery), Lorraine’s right-hand man (Dave Foley), a pair of police officers (Richa Moorjani and Lamorne Morris), and a sinister driver (Sam Spruell) drawn into the conflagration. As Fargo is an anthology series, its events may have no bearing on a theoretical sixth season. However, there have been characters who have popped up in multiple seasons of Fargo; while none of them turned up in the fifth season, it did feature several references to the 1996 Coen Brothers movie the series was inspired by.

While Fargo may be on the back burner for impresario Hawley, his hotly-anticipated Alien series is full steam ahead. Plot details for the series are being kept under wraps for the moment, but we do know it will star Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Alex Lawther, Kit Young, and Fargo’s own David Rysdahl.

There is currently no timeline for a sixth season of Fargo, but FX executives are optimistic about its future. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
