Are you a theatre fan? Missing the enjoyment of watching a performance live?? The all-new National Theatre at Home is a streaming service that is offering unforgettable British theatre to audience members around the world. You are able to watch it from the comfort and safety of your own home.
Earlier this month the National Theatre London started a streaming service releasing an impressive back catalog of some of their famous and outstanding performances from previous years and some scheduled performances that had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.
Now for a small fee you can watch the likes of Dame Helen Mirren, Olivia Colman, Vanessa Kirby, Billie Piper and Tom Hiddleston.
The National Theatre has partnered with the Young Vic Theatre and Donmar Warehouse to bring to audiences a number of their acclaimed performances and it should be a great revenue generator while these venues are closed.
The performances were filmed live in high definition for cinema and captures the essence of live performance, the twists and turns of the story as it unveils itself on the stage but also the atmosphere created by a live audience. The laughter and emotions that you feel sitting around other people as they are equally affected by what they are watching on the stage in front of them.
National Theatre at Home has an impressive catalog including the pantomime Dick Whittington, Mosquitoes with Olivia Colman, The Cherry Orchard with Zoe Wanamaker, Coriolanus with Tim Hiddleston, Phedre with Helen Mirren, Yerma with Billie Piper, Julie with Vanessa Kirby and for a limited time the acclaimed West End performance of War Horse is available on 20th January 2021.
National Theatre at Home is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and will add new titles each month as part of their subscription. Viewing is available on all mobile devices and streaming services.
The subscription to National Theatre at Home is an annual charge of $129.99 a year or a monthly charge of $12.99, or if you wish to rent the productions as you like the cost is $9.99 for each screening.
When the pandemic first hit the world in March 2020, like most venues, the National Theatre was forced to cancel many of its performances. Not to disappoint audiences who couldn’t see these performance, the National Theatre in April 2020 started streaming for free a number of its recorded performances. They continued this for 16 weeks through to the end of July 2020. They released a new production on their YouTube channel every Thursday and was available for a week on YouTube on demand. This resulted in over 15 million views of 16 productions over 4 months reaching a total of 173 countries around the globe.
Following on from this unprecedented success Lisa Burger, the executive director and chief executive of the National Theatre, saw an opportunity to continue to bring these acclimated productions to the homes of their beloved audiences but also discover another revenue stream during an extended lockdown.
National Theatre at Home is being called the theater world’s answer to Netflix, HBO or Hulu.
