Initially John had two major equipments which were an old Ford tractor and a Chevrolet truck. The demand for John’s pole building started to increase so it became compulsory for him to purchase more equipment and take on additional crews.

After completing his education from University of Wisconsin, John holds a degree of Bachelors in Arts he devoted all of his time to his pole building business. Later one Menard was first found as the Menard Cashway Lumber in 1960 by John Menard as its major stockholder and president. The owner purchased a land where a small office and shop were manufactured on the Eau Claire site.
The company started to sell purchasing lumbers and building materials to the public on a cash-and-carry basis. Later on the company added the functions of warehouses and manufacturing by adding plants, steel siding and roofing, beautiful interior and exterior doors, state-of-the-art composite decking, eco-friendly treated lumber, stone and block, engineered roof and floor trusses, fasteners and countertops. After two years, in 1962 the company was incorporated and renamed as Menards to this day.

Menard has made some changes in their policies related to the COVID-19 crisis, which includes:
- Children are welcome. Masks or face coverings are required on children unless in arms or seated in shopping carts.
- Menard’s regular shopping hours have been modified at all of their retailing stores.
- No pets are allowed; however, service dogs are welcome.
- Menards have placed reminders throughout the store to encourage people to remain six feet apart from each other. In addition, they have also placed dividers and floor markings in the areas of heaviest traffic to implement safe distancing.
