Lecrae has recounted the first time he met J. Cole, which turned out to be an embarrassing encounter because the Christian MC was drunk.
Sitting down for an interview with the New Rory and Mal podcast, the Lecrae explained that he was invited to a Super Bowl party and took ample advantage of the free drinks that were available to guests.
“I see Cole. I go up to Cole and I’m like, ‘Yo, what’s up, man?’ And he’s like, ‘What’s going on, bro?” Lecrae recalled, imitating his drunken slur.
“I said, ‘Let me ask you a question, man. You believe in God?’ He was like, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Word? So you go to church?’ He said, ‘I grew up in church but I really wouldn’t say that [I’m a Christian].’”
Lecrae then said to Cole: “You need to call me, bro. Let’s talk!”
He continued: “It gets worse. [He was like] ‘Alright, put your number in my phone.’ So I put my number in his phone, but I didn’t type my name and then I gave him his phone back, and he walks away.”
The Reach Records co-founder went on: “Then I said, ‘Wait a minute! I ain’t even tell you my name, bro.’ He said, ‘I know who you are.’ I was like, ‘Oh!’ and I walked the walk of shame.”
Lecrae then admitted his regret over his drunken behavior: “The next morning I was like, ‘Oh my God! What did I do?! What did I say?!’ So Cole, if you watching this, I apologize for the way I approached you.”
Lecrae has had better encounters with other rap superstars, including his longtime friend Kendrick Lamar.
In an interview with HipHopDX at the 2024 Grammy Awards earlier this year, the Texas native spoke about their friendship and how K. Dot once came to him for spiritual guidance.
“One of the reason why Kendrick is one of my favorites is because early on, he was really transparent and honest and allowed me to be a voice in his life, and I’ll always be grateful to him for that,” said Lecrae, who jokingly called himself “Hip Hop’s chaplain.”
“It’s mutual respect, and I appreciate him for just trying to be a voice. We’re all wrestling in trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. He knows I’m always down for the conversations and open to serving in any way I can.”
Though it’s all love for Kendrick Lamar, Lecrae doesn’t really feel the same about Lil Nas X. The Christian rapper took to social media last month and offered his thoughts on the potential consequences of the 24-year-old’s recent use of religious imagery.
“okay I gotta admit Lil Nas is playing with fire mocking Jesus,” he wrote. “he’s getting the attention he wants from folks at the risk of searing his conscious. Still if God can transform King Neb, murders, [sic] slave masters, sex workers, etc. he can add another Blasphemer to the list.”
In a lengthy caption, he offered more context.
“We generally find ourselves outraged at blatant disrespect of our Lord,” he wrote. “Even the Torah in Leviticus 24 says ‘The one who blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death.’ But as frustrating as it may be to see, here are some thoughts.”
