“Last Supper” – Song Review

NOTE: Please be advised that some of the lyrics in the song are explicit and should not be viewed without parental consent.

D Smoke is from Inglewood, California. He is a pianist, drummer, guitarist, rapper and songwriting that creates his own melodies, lyrics and other parts of musical production. He won the first season of the music competition, Rhythm & Flow, which streams on Netflix. He is building a fan base that appreciates him as an instrumentalist and a vocal performer.

“Last Supper” was originally performed on Netflix with TI and Chance the Rapper on the judgement panel. A lot of hip-hop listeners are considering him rap’s version of Prince. Although he has released an album independently, it is certainly true that many of the record labels are going to want to sign him and produce his music.

“Last Supper” is about independence and not settling to become the person that others want you to be, instead he is promoting that everyone has their own pathway to enlightenment and they should pursue it. He understands his responsibilities as a performer, to be a role model or simply a figure for his friends and family to look up to. His music seems to be motivated by wanted to play that role. He specifically states that instead of compliments he would want the world to come together and work on peaceful solutions to some of its problems.

His rap lyrics are on par with other contemporary rappers. His rap vocal sounds contemporary as well (it is unknow if he also has a singing voice, but that will be seen in the future). The fact that he can play a variety of instruments can assist his artistry by creating the sounds through the creative process exactly how they should be played through live performances and recording sessions.

His music may be significant as the rap audience may decide to listen to other performers who use live instruments, and the instrumental musicians may give rap a chance to listen to.
