Although it was the second episode of the season, last Saturday’s SNL featured Kim Kardashian West (KKW) as host and Halsey as the musical guest. This was one of the most highly anticipated episodes for the series in a long time. While it is too early to find the figures regarding the ratings for the program, they will be released soon and everyone will have the opportunity to see how many people viewed the show. Many writers are suggesting that it will be the most watched episode of the decade potentially.
Usually when someone is hosting on SNL they are to be a part of the sketches that the show produces every week and to promote their upcoming films, TV shows, books and other creative works that they are about to put on display. KKW owns several businesses and is a social media influencer; however she did not go into promoting a particular brand live on the air. It was a rare thing, but having KKW as host was more about seeing her ability to be a comedic actor. That is the reason why most viewers tuned in; they were curious to see if she could deliver stand up jokes and participate well in the sketches written by Colin Jost and Michael Che.
Here performance was exceptional. KKW appeared in nearly all of the sketches during the first half of show. She delivered a funny opening monologue, and had several memorable comedic moments throughout the show. It went so well that the producers for SNL will likely invite her to be the guest host again. The great thing about her performance was her ability to focus on the comedy, even though there were some jokes that were about her family members and husband Kanye West.
It must be stated that even though the show was highly anticipated it was also controversial for some media outlets. Many of them have been writing for months on the possible divorce between Kanye and KKW. However, over the last month or so they have been showing signs that they are going to keep their marriage alive. For example, KKW appeared at all three listening events for Kanye’s newly released album entitled Donda, what is inspired by his late mother. At one of the events, KKW was wearing a wedding dress, and many in the press saw this as a sign that she and Kanye may be working out their differences. Also, Kanye has been in New York rehearsing with KKW for the SNL show, she even thanks him at the end which is another positive sign that they are likely to work things out.
The best part about this episode is that audiences get to see KKW’s creative side. She has been on Keeping Up with the Kardashians for several years and now that show has reached its final season. Therefore, many of her fans known her primarily as a reality tv show actress. Her performance on SNL proved that (creatively) she is not one dimensional.
While SNL appeared to be a fun opportunity for her, KKW’s ultimate goal is to become a lawyer and fight for innocent people who have been incarcerated. Her entire family and Kanye appear to be very supportive of these efforts.
