Kansas Softball Star Showcases Art in New Restaurant

Sydney McKinney plays shortstop for Wichita State’s NCAA women’s softball team. She had the highest batting average and number of hits for the 2022 season. She is a two-time All-American. When McKinney’s off the field, she spends her time creating and showcasing art.

“It’s really nice to just sit down, paint, draw, and not worry about anything but what you’re doing on the canvas,” McKinney said to KWCH.

She specializes in abstract paintings. Her works feature vibrant colors and creative visual design. Although she has only been painting a few years, she is ready to showcase her art to the world.

Wichita-based restaurant, Homegrown, is opening a new location in Liberty, Mo. It is set to display McKinney’s largest work of art .

“To have that relationship with Sydney that we formed in Wichita and to have that connection also up in Liberty and Kansas City is really special for us,” said Jon Rolph-the restaurant’s founder. “It makes it even more authentic and more real, which is what we’re all about.

McKinney expressed she never imagined her work would be on display for others to see. She is especially appreciative her work will be showcased in a restaurant that is close to her hometown of Norborne, Mo.
