La Luz de Jesus Gallery is excited to present two exhibitions: Familiar Feeling and Small Bites of Imaginary Reality, both to open October 4th at the gallery. Familiar Feeling is a debut exhibition for local artist, illustrator and muralist Ashley Dreyfus. She will be exhibiting a new series of artworks with colorful, vintage inspired palettes and 60s/70s era nostalgia. Many utilize her alter-egos and anthropomorphized animals and plants, enjoying their best selves, to usher this wistful affection for the past, despite these all being entirely original designs. “If Thomas Kinkade was the painter of light, Ashley Dreyfus is the painter of good vibes,” the gallery notes.
Small Bites of Imaginary Reality welcomes back Underground comic artist andAmerican painter Guy Colwell to La Luz with a collection of itty-bitty, teeny-weenypaintings and ink drawings. Some are early studies of larger, famous works orsmaller narratives better suited for a tiny canvas. Over 100 tiny paintings by Guy Colwell will be exhibited and with a huge variety of content; from animal portraitsto nude figures to more lowbrow content.
Colwell will also be signing his newest graphic novel at the opening,Delights: A Story of Hieronymus Bosch. An excerpt within the synopsis from Fantagraphics: “In Guy Colwell’s first full graphic novel in 33 years, we see onepainter, Colwell himself, consider another, Hieronymus Bosch, and the storybehind the latter’s most notable work told in sequential panels. The known detailsof Bosch’s life, and the commissioning of his enormous triptych The Garden OfEarthly Delights, are scant. Colwell takes the facts of Bosch’s time and settingand constructs a tale of a man and artist torn equally among piety, creativity, andcommerce.”
