Justice Stephen Breyer to Retire from Supreme Court

According to multiple news outlets, Justice Stephen Breyer is set to retire from the Supreme Court at the end of the current term.

President Joe Biden and Breyer will appear together at the White House Thursday to announce the retirement.

Political scientists suggests that President Biden will have the opportunity to pick another liberal Supreme Court Justice.

Breyer is currently the oldest member at the age of 83. Talks surrounding his retirement have been going on over the past several months as many Democrats want him to stepdown before the midterm elections.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted, “It has always been the decision of any Supreme Court Justice if and when they decide to retire, and how they want to announce it, and that remains the case today.”

President Biden expressed on the campaign trail his commitment to nominating and approving the first Black woman to the Supreme Court in US history.
