Derek DelGaudio, a conceptual magician, had a seventy-two week successful run of It & Of Itself at the Daryl Roth Theater in New York. The show sold out for almost the entire run and was an absolute hit with word of mouth spreading and celebrities and Off-Broadway fans desperately seeking out tickets.
The successful and curious theater production was recorded over a number of successive nights by acclaimed director, Frank Oz, and is now available on Hulu.
It & Of Itself is a fascinating piece of theater, it will leave you amazed and also raw with emotions. It is a curious presentation where there is only one person on stage, DelGaudio, as he presents a number varying stories and idea that will make you think about your place in the world and how you fit into it.
The Roulettista, a fable of a man who gambles his life every night. DelGaudio goes in detail how this man had given up on life, wanted to end it all and through a rush of adrenaline every time he played Russian Roulette found a way to keep on going, but there was the ongoing hope or dare that maybe this time he played might be his last.
Through out this theater production DelGaudio peppers the production with a lot of personal stories, one in particular is very moving. The story of his mother and moving to a new neighborhood and his own personal experience making friends and how the the prop of a “gold brick” is featured heavily.
The best way to describe It & Of Itself is part personal journey and part magic trick. The real magic trick here is how this leaves you questioning a lot about yourself, what is meaningful to you personally and why you make the decisions you do in life. This show made me question a lot which was not something I expected at all to experience.
Derek DelGaudio is one remarkable individual who has created what can only be described as a phenomenal stage play. This production is like nothing you would have ever seen before and probably won’t see again for a very long time, simply due to the creative ingenuity and captivating personal story that is presented.
It & Of Itself has one strong and empowering message for all its viewers, it also makes you use your imagination, reminisce about your childhood with your parents, but also make you question what you have just watched.
It & Of Itself is a great way to put the antics of last year in perspective but also reignite the passion for life and what you want to experience.
