‘Imagine Van Gogh’ is an exhibition of the works of Vincent Van Gogh that are projected in an enormous room. This exhibition blends technology and fine art to achieve a great art experience.
The viewers can walk under Van Gogh’s Starry Night or admire the Sunflowers in close detail, just like one of the scenes of Emily in Paris, a Netflix series.
Annabelle Mauger, the designer of this exhibition, uses the artistic approach named ‘Image Totale’. This approach involves a visual projection technique that makes the viewers right inside the paintings. They are no longer passive viewers, but active viewers who immerse and explore the artwork in their own way.
This exhibition is a well-articulation of a strong linkage between art and technology. Basically, art is technology. ‘Art’ can be traced to the Ancient Greek concept of technê as skillful manual labor that needs specific knowledge. A painter needs skills to articulate their feelings on canvas. Now, visual and audio technology is used to bring viewers to the aesthetic experience.
How technology can be used to create an aesthetic experience? Aesthetics is relating to human senses. Senses become intermediary between objects and the aesthetic experience. Humans perceive aesthetics of objects with their senses. The technology in this exhibition allows the viewers to maximize the use of all their senses.
