Disney’s new live action Mulan was set to release last March but did not have the opportunity to do so due to the outbreak of COVIID-19. The film had a budget of $200 million and was expected to be a blockbuster hit with the potential of exceeding the financial successes of Aladdin and The Lion King. The company decided to make the movie available for its Disney + streaming service for members with premium access (at an additional $29.99 a month). Mulan generated $35.5 million from members, which may be viewed as a positive because the company did not have to pay distribution cost, but it falls well short of the mark they intended to make. Perhaps over time the film will gross more than its budget, but that could take several months before it occurs. This is the new environment for film companies due to the pandemic, and unfortunately Disney and other studios will probably use smaller budgets for their upcoming releases until the pandemic is under control.
