Here & There is a beautiful look at two lives whose paths cross for a moment in time. The readers get to see how Dan’s and Aki’s lives compare and how their encounter impacts each of them. When Aki the sailor visits Dan’s cafe, each enjoys the community gathered there – despite being strangers, the breaking of bread brings a group together and offers each the sense of belonging. I think the most poignant aspect of Here & There is the fact that long after the meal, Aki and Dan each looks at a memento of the afternoon and recalls the warmth felt in the company of others. I highly recommend Here & There – Lu effectively illuminates the power people have to bring joy to a stranger.
