“He lives in You” is a song created by Lebo M. and his South African Choir for an album inspired by the The Lion King entitled Rhythm of the Pride Lands. It is performed twice in the musical adaptation of the original film, and became the opening song for The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride which was released in 1998. The song is an African spiritual that has become a fan favorite for many who enjoy Disney’s Lion King franchise.

The lyrics are simple and direct. They are meant to be used as a motivation and a method of clearing the mind in order to remember your ancestors, or the people who came before you. There are many African cosmologies both on the continent and in the diaspora that creates cultural song and dance that is meant to show the ancestors how much they are appreciated and if they would be willing to provide some divine guidance, particularly if you have a listener who is going through a tough time. He lives in you is a reference and acknowledgement of the hundreds of thousands of people who came before us, and how we are a reflection of them spiritually when our behavior and well-being is consistent with God.

The vocals are great for every medium this song has been performed in. It is unique to discover a song that can be performed equally as well on the big screen as the Broadway stage or with a small ensemble. The song is also very catchy, if you are the type of person that likes to hum or whistle throughout the day, “He lives in You” would probably be a candidate for that occurring.

The instrumentation is a unique blend of drums and keyboards. The sound is one that invites multiple people to listen and sing along. After the initial verse of the song listeners will know exactly where they can chime in.

This song is important to society because it indicates methods of learning, knowing and believing where someone comes from; with this understanding comes a great responsibility to live a life of integrity in order to represent your ancestors to the best of your abilities, and to also become enlightened through God consciousness.
