Hartford Art School Celebrates Faculty Artists in “Pathways” Exhibition

A new exhibition at the University of Hartford, Pathways: Hartford Art School Faculty Show, unveils the latest creations from the esteemed faculty of the Hartford Art School (HAS). The artwork is diverse in materials, subject matter, and style, representing a collective commitment to curiosity, process, and making. From porcelain to painting and even augmented reality, the show paints a rich portrait of the multiple creative realms explored by HAS faculty members. In many cases, the work on view engages ideas that expand beyond art to touch on various fields of study such as literature, science, social systems, and psychology. The exhibition celebrates the many talented minds that shape the Hartford Art School educational experience.

Pathways was organized by eight students from the University of Hartford’s spring 2024 Art History Internship class. The students chose the title Pathways to evoke the ways in which the faculty’s artistic practices intersect with their role as educators. Through research and interviews, the students gained insight into the backgrounds, perspectives, and journeys that led these artists to a career focused on education. In the exhibition wall labels, visitors can read the student interpretations of each faculty member’s unique pathway.

These pathways will be explored further through a slate of exciting free programming during the exhibition, which kicks off with an opening reception at Joseloff Gallery in West Hartford, Connecticut, on September 12 from 5 to 7pm. On September 25 from 12:45 to 2pm, learn about the artistic practices, career paths, and pedagogies of six faculty artists in an artist talk panel in Wilde Auditorium. On October 7 from 12:45 to 2pm, six art historians from the university will share more about their current scholarship and research interests in an art history panel in Wilde Auditorium. On October 25 from 4:30 to 6pm, faculty from The Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz will perform live music in Joseloff Gallery. On November 14 from 5:30 to 7pm, poets from the faculty of Hillyer College and the College of Arts and Sciences will place their work in conversation with visual art from Pathways in a group poetry reading in Joseloff Gallery.

The exhibition is on view through December 14 at the University of Hartford in Connecticut.
