It is the subject side lit, or back lit and back source hard or soft. Will the photographer set up the picture so that it is low-key or high key. There is always an overall emotional feel and aesthetic that is changing the meaning of the image. As in all great art, great photographs generally have sense of compositional form and balance. So, do not be affraid to play around, break all the rules in order to establish personal unique style.
