As every year passes, I worry that many people aren’t reading as much books. With the rapid development of technology, adults and children spend more time on their phones or digital devices doom scrolling instead of reading a book. And according to a recent national language survey found out that over 60 percent of people in Japan didn’t read a single book per month.
That is every three out of five people according to the survey done by the Cultural Affairs Agency. They surveyed 6000 people that are 16 or older and received valid responses from over 3500 people from January to March 2024. This survey is done every five years and this is the first time that a majority of people didn’t read a single book per month.
According to the survey, 62.6 people said they haven’t read a book per month, an increase of over 15 percent since the last survey. To make matters worse, over 75 percent of the people that didn’t read a book per month said they still got information from other sources such as social media posts and online articles. I would have liked the difference between both two because they are not the same.
About 25 percent of people answered no to the question of obtaining information from other sources which makes you wonder how they are functioning without knowing what is going on in the world.
Over 40 percent of the people surveyed said that they read e-books, which saw a 15 percent increase since the last survey. However, almost 70 percent of the people said the number of books they read has fallen. That is unfortunate more so because over 43 percent of those people said it is because “information devices taking up time.”
Do I fear a future where most of the public doesn’t read books? A little bit to be honest. Even right now, it is evident many people don’t read books and many people rely on social media for information and news. As we all know, social media posts can be written by anyone and often times, the people posting them have an agenda.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a perfect solution to a decline in reading by adults and kids. Schools and libraries can encourage people to read more books but ultimately, it is up to the individual or their parents to encourage them to read. What do you think of this news?
