Fear Me by B.B. Reid

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I don’t believe in fairy tales and Prince Charming.

I believe in fear.

He taught me how to be afraid.

We first met on a playground on a wonderful summer day. It was the first time he hurt me and it wouldn’t be the last. For ten years, he’s been my tormentor and I’ve been his forbidden. But then he went away, and yet I was still afraid.

Now he’s back and wants more than just my tears. You see…he thinks I sent him away so now he wants revenge…and he knows just how to get it.

PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS. This book is a new adult and contains rough elements such as harsh language, mild violence, strong sexual content, alpha male, antihero, blackmail, and dubious consent.

The heroine: Lake Monroe – when she was young, she went to visit her aunt in a town called Six Forks. She was at the park and met a bunch of kids, an older boy, whom all the other kids listened to knocked her off a jungle gym and she broke her arm. Her parents were supposed to return to get her, but never came back. They were never found after that, and Lake ended up living with her aunt from then on.

The Hero: Kieran Masters – he has always been a bully, and he chose Lake as his victim early on. He would often threaten to kill her and told Lake that he had killed another girl, he just referred to as “her”. He tormented her at school every day though she never told her aunt. Though right before his senior year and her junior year, he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and went away for a year. He was certain that it was Lake that framed him.

The Story: Kieran returned to Six Forks the summer before Lake’s senior year, and since he missed a year, he would now be a senior as well. Lake had one run in with Kieran and spent the rest of the summer hiding in her house. Her best friend Willow was out of town all summer at camp. On the first day of school, Kieran shows up to drive Lake to school and he ends up threatening to kill her aunt if she doesn’t do everything he says. He wants her and he wants to return the favor of her framing him. He tells her that she took away his freedom for a year, so he was taking hers. He made it look like they were dating, made her give up her friend Willow and basically forced her to be his girlfriend.

I read this book once before, back in 2018 before I started doing reviews, so I don’t remember my thoughts on the book, but I only gave it three stars at the time. My tastes have changed quite a bit since then and I like the dark and bully romances a lot better now than I did at the time. Though I think back then I just hated the things Kieran did to Lake and how mean he was to her. I still didn’t like how he treated her, though now I appreciate that kind of thing more for keeping my attention and keeping me focused on the book.

I also like the mysteries in this book, such as what happened to Lake’s parents, and some other people within the book say some cryptic things that you just have to wonder about. Plus, there was this character named Trevor, who is in the popular group, but he has a secret that he threatens Lake about. Though I don’t know why she kept his secret. There was also the mystery of Kieran’s life before he came to Six Forks, I think that was the biggest one of all.

This audiobook was told in Lake’s point of view via solo narration and was narrated by Ava Erickson. I generally don’t like solo narration, especially when the narrator is a female, but I do love Ava Erickson. She has a very pleasant voice that sounds youthful and is perfect for Lake.
