Exclusive Premiere: Get Real Weird with Item 9

[ad_1]

“I don’t know how many years on this earth I got left….I’m gonna get real weird with it.”

For a certain strain of slightly-too-online humanoid, Frank Reynolds is the definition of gross, weirdly folksy wisdom. All impulse, all carefree insanity, he’s the creepy uncle we’re all glad we don’t have but watch and quote endlessly on repeat. Sure, he’s nauseating at times, but he’s lovably, comfortingly nauseating.

Chaotic noisegrind duo Item 9 channel the same nausea-inducing nostalgia into their blistering debut 2, out tomorrow on Lifeless Chasm Records. Steeped in the sleaze of Las Vegas and baked the cult classics of the noughts, 2 is a furious onslaught of tortured noise, skronky riffs, and screaming gutturals spliced with samples from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Futurama,” and “My Strange Addiction,” among others. Like Frank, it’s mildly gross and wildly entertaining.

Death metal is tortured and distended until it begins dissolving into a torrent of sound. Echoes of groove grab the ear, only to be obliterated in a storm of distortion. Growls are even darker and more threatening when blown beyond the realm of human sound, while clouds of noise surround and suffocate. Whether you’re a tried-and-true fan of gorenoise and grind, or looking for your gateway drug, 2 is a must-listen.

2 will be released tomorrow. Stream the entire Item 9 debut below and pre-order at this link.
