‘Emily In Paris’ Season 4, Part 1: Recap

So Nico’s billionaire father insists that Mindy wear something he picked out for her, and my blood was BOILING as it all unfolded. Whew, this storyline made me so mad. But I loved how Mindy handled it. We very quickly start to see how sleazy Nico’s dad, Louis De Leon, has been over the years through other storylines. But Mindy’s way of not putting up with his BS felt like pitch perfect execution for her character. I also like how direct she was with Nico about how she won’t put up with mess like this from him either. — Erin

Yes! Mindy has always been an independent character, but I feel like she came into her own even more this season. I love that she challenged Nico with the dress, and I think her interactions with Nico this season are often her drawing firm boundaries that are aligned with her morals and expectations for what she expects from a partner. At the end of the last season when Nico says he isn’t going to go to Camille and Gabriel’s engagement party with her but then shows up at the last minute, and they fly in via helicopter, it made me pause because of how controlling Nico’s gesture seemed. He’d only go with her if they traveled in the super expensive and super disruptive (when it landed) way that he wanted to. That scene also showed the pull that Mindy feels between the lavish lifestyle she grew up in and the independence she wants for herself, and I think this season she is doing a better job of balancing those conflicting feelings in a way that is on her terms, and the dress is such a good example of that. — Sarah Hunter
