Disney Plus has finally released their new action version of “Mulan” (Walt Disney Pictures) with a runtime of 115 minutes. It’s currently available to premium subscribers only on the streaming service for nearly $30 which is expensive for just one viewing alone.

The film was supposed to premiere in theaters on March 27, 2020, but due to COVID-19, it is now streaming on the Disney Plus channel instead. No word when or if it will eventually hit theaters this Fall. It stars Yifei Liu as Mulan and focuses on a young Chinese maiden who becomes a warrior disguised as a male soldier to take her father’s place in the Imperial Army to defend and protect her family. If you haven’t seen this film yet; I highly recommend you watch Disney’s animated version first which is the version I saw recently on VOD. I didn’t see the newer action version yet, I’m waiting for it to be released on VOD or on Disney Plus without a premium subscription.

Here’s the official Mulan trailer on YouTube:

Mulan is not a retelling of the animated predecessor which was released in 1998. It’s a whole different layout with some of the animated sequences thrown in the movie. This woman is special and fights for the honor of her family. She’s heroic and stands up for what she truly believes in. She has a younger sister in the film unlike the animated version so it’s slightly different.

The film also stars Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan the villain, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li play supporting roles.
