Disney Announces Greatest Showman Live Musical and Frozen Stage Capture
There was plenty of news for musical fans at D23.
This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. At Disney’s annual D23 expo August 9, the House of Mouse gave a preview of its upcoming slate of films and stage productions. Of the biggest note was the announcement that Disney Theatricals is developing a stage adaptation of the 2017 musical film The Greatest Showman.
In addition to that news, the House of Mouse also announced that the West End production of Frozen starring Samantha Barks will be available to stream on Disney+ in 2025.
On the animated film front, there will be a Frozen 3 animated film (with another sequel in progress), to be released in 2027. Disney also released a new trailer for Moana 2, starring Auli’i Cravalho (who will soon make her Broadway debut September 16 in Cabaret). Watch the trailer below.
It was not revealed who will be working on Greatest Showman. But the film starred Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum, whose dream is to create a circus. Tony Award-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the songs for the film, and won a Golden Globe for the song “This Is Me.”
On the streaming front, the musical Frozen was based on the Disney film of the same name. The musical opened on Broadway in March 2018 and closed March 2020. The West End production, starring Samantha Barks as Elsa and Laura Dawkes as Anna, ran in the West End for three years—it recently closed in January. Frozen features music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (who also wrote songs for the animated film and its sequels) and a book by Jennifer Lee.
Disney did not announce who will be working on Frozen 3.
