Diablo II: Resurrected’s Ladder System Explained

Fans of dungeon exploration, gear grinding, and vanquishing evil will like any Diablo game. However, once you’ve achieved your game’s “peak,” it’s tough to keep it new. The developers at Blizzard have addressed this problem by introducing seasonal changes. Seasons are a staple of the Diablo series and while many players may be familiar with them from Diablo 3, they actually debuted in Diablo 2 and have resumed in Diablo 2: Resurrection. Ladder System describes the seasonal gameplay introduced in this remake. As we wrap up Season 1 and prepare for Season 2, let’s quickly review the fundamentals of this ranking Ladder System.

The Ladder is what?
This was how dedicated gamers of the first Diablo 2 were ranked against one another. You don’t actually face off against other players in this mode like you would in other ranking modes. It’s more akin to a race for speed, actually (where you can sometimes use your Ladder friends to help each other level up). To participate, simply make a character with the “Ladder” designation who cannot rely on any of your other characters or equipment and must perform a set of challenges and tasks within a given time limit. In the original game, the squad played through 27 of these before moving on.

It’s obvious to newer Diablo fans that this was the forerunner to the Season system in Diablo 3. Like Soul Shards and Angelic Crucibles, the later seasons of Diablo 2’s Ladder featured their own unique events and D2R ladder items that altered the game’s mechanics. Seasons in Diablo 2 emphasize player speed, skill, and rivalry as opposed to Diablo 3, where the emphasis is on build goals and time-limited gear.

How are rankings determined?
Any time a new Diablo 2 Ladder season debuts, players can log in and start fresh. Then you’ll have the option of turning them into a Ladder character instead of a regular one. Ladder comes in four distinct flavors: standard, hardcore, standard expansion, and hardcore expansion.

The maximum levels and experience in Diablo 2: Resurrected are 99 and 3,520,000,000. Until someone reaches level 99, you are rated based on your level and experience, but after that, your rank is determined on how quickly you reached that milestone. That’s why the first player to reach level 99 with a fully experienced character is always at the top of the leaderboard. Everyone below them is vying for positions.

You can get high-level runewords, Horadric Cube formulas, and special item/equipment drops according on how high up the ranks you get.

When will Season 1 of Ladder end and Season 2 begin?
On April 28, Diablo 2: Resurrected’s Ladder mode made its debut. Players that join the game late will need to move rapidly to establish themselves with their Ladder characters. Season 1 concludes on August 25th, after all. After the conclusion of Season 1, the developers will take some time to reset the system before starting Ladder Season 2 in early September.
