Cloudy June “Devil is a Woman” Song Review

The entire project, from music recording to the streaming of the official music video, Cloudy June’s goal is to challenge conventional norms. Her music asserts that while everyone is different, we all are valuable to the world. In particularly with “Devil is a Woman,” June expresses that her sexuality should not be restrained or forced to conform to anyone else’s ideals. The song accents these ideas with an edgier, dark pop type of sound. She also encourages listeners and viewers to think outside the box as it relates to morality. In the music video, she is tempted by a serpent who convinces her its okay to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge, just like the biblical story in Genesis. She uses the story, one in which almost everyone will be familiar with, and suggests that we look ourselves in the mirror and realize who we truly are and how we should accept and embrace it.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Don’t you ever make angels cry
Never misbehave, stay in line
But she looks so good in red like a secret valentine
I can’t change my ways, God knows why

These lyrics from verse one establishes the image of the perfect self. Someone who does everything in life according to someone else’s ideas. This person is so acceptable that she could never make an angel cry. This is how she appears on the outside, but on the inside, she is an icon within her own universe, someone who simply dares to be herself.

Chorus

If the sin is so bad, tell me why’s it gotta taste so sweet (The devil is a woman)
No, I’ve never been a Saint, but her power got me on my knees (The devil is a woman)
They say, “Watch out for the serpentine, she’s sly but her curves don’t lie”
Your paradise sucks but your hell sounds good to me

The chorus establishes a dichotomy, on one side there is the perfect image of salvation and the other is a more morally acceptable realm. The great thing about the world she wants to exist in is that people do not need to measure up to some unrealistic level of perfection. The song would suggest that we are fragile sometimes; we feel powerful and at other moments we need a helping hand, but neither circumstance should end with conformity.

Verse 2

There’s no halo but choker chains
Just one kiss, it’s your broken faith
Don’t fear who don’t obey when [?] gets locked away
If that’s your world, I’m a hopeless case

June asserts that sexuality, love and expression should not be a deterrence in life, but rather something that brings people closer together.
