Def Leppard – ‘Yeah! Bonus CD with Backstage Interviews’ (2006) – (The Def Leppard Collection Series) – 2 Loud 2 Old Music

In 2006, Def Leppard released their 9th studio album, ‘Yeah!’. It was a covers album and had 14 tracks on it. The band, however, recorded a ton more songs that were not used. Some wound up on the Japanese Edition as bonus tracks, others as Best Buy bonus tracks, Target and even iTunes. You would literally need to buy 5 versions of the album to get all the tracks. Well, you don’t really need to buy the Japanese edition because the Wal-Mart edition had the two Japanese Bonus Tracks as well as 3 more songs and a selection of interviews with the band. This version has the most bonus tracks of any of the other offers and is a great buy. It would’ve been released on the same day as the album which was May 23, 2006.

The opening track is the only song that breaks the band’s rule about all being British songs. It is cover of the Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker’s “American Girl”. I want to say that all these songs are the demos because they aren’t played with all the band members. This one has Joe on vocals, but it is Vivian Campbell on all instruments except Marc Danzeisen on drums. Additional backing vocals with Jesse Sheely. The song captures the energy of the original, the guitar sound like they should and the harmonies are great. A fun, energetic song and a great choise.

The first interview with the band, “Backstage Interview #1”, sees the band talking about the most recent tour with little snippets from each member. They all say it has been great, but Rick Allen says travel was hard. They also talk about how the audience seems to change with each tour.

Then we get a cover of Iggy Pop’s “Search & Destroy”. This one is sung by Phil Collen and he plays all the instruments. Phil loves his punk and he brings it in full force with this one. His vocals are great. I love his angst and attitude with his vocals. Iggy fits him nicely. One of the cooler tracks on the bonus disc.

“Backstage Interview #2” sees the band members talking about wanting to do a covers album. Joe has always wanting to do a cover album like David Bowie’s Pin-Ups. The label came to the band asking them to do one so Joe jumped on the chance and here we are now with a covers album. They all mention that they thing “Rock On” is the best song on the album. It ain’t a bad one for sure.

Next up is David Bowie cover of “Space Oddity”. Joe Elliott handles all the singing and all the instruments on this one. If this is a demo, DAMN! It is a great one. It is fully flushed out with all the sound effects, the cool drum roll and Joe sounds amazing. This is a brilliant cover and sticks with the essence and vibe of the original. A great job by Joe.

“Backstage Interview #3” sees the band talk about the rules of the covers album. 1) They have to be hits, 2) British Hits, and 3) Out before the band signed with a label. They had 100 songs (20 from each) and a lot of overlap which helped narrow it down. They tried not to pick the obvious hits. They did a good job with their selection, mostly.

One of the cool tracks on here is “Dear Friend” by Queen. The reason for the coolness of it is that it is sung by Rick Savage. He never sings. He also does all the instrumentation on it. He is no Freddie Mercury, but who is, yet he does a fantastic job. A short song at a little over a minute, but really a standout track as we get Sav on vocals. Coolness factor of 10!

The final track is a cover of Jobriath’s “Heartbeat”. I don’t know Jobriath, but this is a beautiful piano ballad with Joe on vocals. One of his best vocal performances on all the Yeah! songs and another one of my favorite covers they have done. Joe’s vocals bring the feels. For those that don’t know, Jobriath was one of the first openly gay artists to be signed to a record deal. He was also one of the first musicians to die from AIDS in 1983. I think picking this track was a nice celebration of him as an artist.

Alright, there you have it. The Wal-Mart Bonus CD for the album ‘Yeah!’. I am not rating this one since it is a bonus disc that came with the purchase of the original album. All you need to know is that the 5 bonus tracks on here are all fantastic. Not a bad one in the bunch. If you would pull out the 4-5 bad ones on the main album and replace them with these, that album could’ve gotten a 5.0 Star rating. But they weren’t so there you go. You can get these songs on The Collection Volume 3 Set if you need them and it will give you all the Yeah! bonus tracks all on one disc. And yes, I have it.
