David Coblitz – Holocaust Remembered

Artists are constantly looking for ways to create art pieces that are both socially aware and culturally significant. In David Coblitz’s mixed media piece entitled “Holocaust Remembered” the artist discovered a way to create contemporary art that brings about social awareness of historical events.

First thing that is visually striking about this piece is the symmetry between the figure on the left and the figure on the right. It is important to note that both figures are in the same position; however, the figure on the left is a historical figure that lived during times of the Holocaust, and the figure on the right is a woman from today.

This symbolically represents the idea that the injustices that occurred during the Holocaust are not andshould not be forgotten by today’s generation, and should be something that people should study today to ensure that such atrocities do not occur anywhere on the planet. The overlaying of barbed wire with the gray tones of each figure creates an art piece that is both emotionally engaging and visually timeless.

Audiences will observe this piece and see themselves in the expressions of both figures and come to know that we as humans are not far removed from historical events like the Holocaust, and that all humans have a moral and human obligation to be persistent in their pursuit to change the world in order to improve the human condition.
