Denzel Washington steps into the role of director for “A Journal for Jordan,” a movie about the real-life romance between Army 1st Sgt. Charles Monroe King and journalist Dana Canedy. The movie is set to open exclusively in theaters on Dec. 25, 2021.

Michael B. Jordan takes on the role of King and newcomer Chanté Adams plays Canedy. King and Canedy had a son named Jordan together, and King only met his Jordan once before he was killed by a roadside bomb while deployed to Iraq in 2006.

Columbia Pictures has released the first trailer for “A Journal for Jordan.

Canedy gave King a journal and asked him to write about his life for their son, and she later included those journal entries in her bestselling 2009 book, “A Journal for Jordan: A Story of Love and Honor.” The movie follows their relationship and features King’s writing from the journal.

Michael B. Jordan most recently appeared as the fictional John Kelly in “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse,” a movie that tells the story of how Navy SEAL Kelly becomes lethal secret operator John Clark. Washington is next on-screen playing the lead role in director Joel Coen’s movie, “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” Adams played rapper Roxanne Shante in the 2017 movie “Roxanne Roxanne” and will appear in the upcoming Prime Video television series based on the movie “A League of Their Own.”Advertisement

This movie looks to be both a romantic story about unexpected love and a reminder of the sacrifices made by military families. Washington has a long track record of making movies about men and women of strong character who take responsibility for their lives, so “A Journal for Jordan” is almost certain to sit comfortably alongside those other movies.

Canedy has gone on to a fantastically successful career since King’s death. She was the first Black woman to serve as a senior editor at The New York Times. She won a Pulitzer Prize for her work on the 2001 NYT series, “How Race Is Lived in America.” That led to Canedy becoming the first Black and first female administrator of the Pulitzer Prize committee. She’s now the first Black person to lead a major publishing imprint in her role as a senior vice president and publisher at Simon & Schuster.
