Covid-19, Technology and Art

Covdid-19 is responsible for many country’s needing to shut down their economies, make adjustments to public health policies, and cause Governors to devise plans to re-open businesses, schools and places of public assembly. The coronavirus has a negative impact on all industries, and it is particularly straining for the arts, entertainment and recreation sector. The top companies in all economic sectors are losing billions of dollars collectively. This has led to a large number of unemployment applications and company furloughs. In some cases, the coronavirus is so severe that it causes companies to change their business operations permanently, perhaps sending some jobs to another location or to work from home. At the time of writing this article, nearly 160,000 Americans have died due to the airborne illness. The United States is losing its citizens at a rate of about 1000 people per day, and it is difficult for citizens to have hope and faith in a resolution. The scientists are stating that a vaccine may be available as early as December 2020, but there is no guarantee that it will mitigate all the symptoms of the disease and Covid-19 itself. They would need time to run clinical trials to see if the vaccine is safe for widespread distribution.

Many citizens are still on a stay at home order or had their job arranged to work from home. Since businesses were not given time to prepare for the negative impact of this virus, they have relied on technology to continue its operations. Technical solutions can be efficient, or they can have a large learning curve depending on the type of software or hardware that needs to be implemented in order for companies to run. Schools were also caught by surprise and needed to quickly develop methods of teaching students virtually. Implementing technical solutions are not always easy, but due to Covid-19 it has become a necessity that millions of people around the world are having to learn to adapt to-even if they are not tech savvy.

Technology has also been implemented for organizations in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector. Even though social distancing is a best mitigation strategy, it is impossible to open movie theaters, Broadway stages, galleries, museums, cultural festivals and many other events. The top studios in film, television, theatre and music have used technology in order to compensate for the loss of having a live audience; they are using streaming services to showcase their art. There is still a lot of analysis that needs to take place in order to determine the quantitative affect the coronavirus has on the arts, but in the mean time patrons of the arts are using streaming services in order to connect with the content they appreciate. Without the effective use of apps for streaming services, any organization in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector would be unable to provide a product or service to an arts patron.

The coronavirus has put the entire arts sector in a situation in which it needs to invest in technical solutions in order to keep its audiences connected to its creative products and services. As public health returns back to normal-hopefully sooner rather than later-it is possible that many organizations in the arts may still use technology for streaming services even though their mainstages would become available.  Everyone agrees that the world is in a serious pandemic; however, it is possible that once the virus is contained, many organizations may have collected data that indicates it could reach a broader audience if they continue to use streaming services in addition to their traditional products and services.
