Components of a Health and Safety Plan

Health and Safety Plan

Policy

Including each component of a construction safety and health plan would be the primary priority of any team tasked with creating company policy. The first component would be the determination of an overall safety and health policy, which would be an official company document outlining the specific enforcement procedures for ensuring a safe and secure working environment. I would structure it by creating a policy handbook, acquiring the executive director’s signature on any measures, including language ensuring the appropriate working environment for all staff; provide an explanation for all mandatory procedures, and details of how to enforce the measures within the policy.

Safety and Health

The safety and health goals target specific areas of high priority and explain a desired level of outcome. I would structure the goals by including them on pages within the policy handbook, explain to supervisors and management regarding the examining of facilities at least one hour before operation, determine length of delay in operation and procedures concerning loss of time, the appropriate procedures for processing potential claims of worker’s compensation, as well as how to handle instances of property damage and near-miss accidents. One of the most essential components of the goal’s sections would be to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and regulations.

Roles and Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities assign particular workplace jurisdiction over specific tasks for each employee. The policies would be structured by explaining the roles and responsibilities in the policy handbook and various other documents in both print and electronic form at the company. The document would describe the manager’s and supervisor’s responsibility to oversee and inspect construction operation activities and facilities, provide clear employee expectations and any procedures regarding workplace safety. A major component of the manager’s responsibilities would be to generate safety reports after inspecting construction areas. Safety reports should include information regarding the enforcement, compliance behavior, and the adequacy of addressing OSHA standards. The discipline policy and procedures describe the actions taken by the company when employees do not follow each role and responsibility. I would construct the procedures by including them immediately following the roles and responsibilities on all documentation, emphasizing the company’s right of termination in most circumstances and progressive plan for minor offenses.

Inspections and Investigations

The company would also possess the ability to conduct job-site inspections, not only prior to the beginning of any construction projects, but any time management staff found it necessary. I would construct the job-site inspection policies simultaneously with those concerning accident investigations, presenting them adjacently in the policy manual in order for employees to see how they are related but carry distinct procedural differences. Record keeping and training would be constructed similarly as each concept provides information regarding integral employee behaviors, but require distinct workplace actions for implementation

Medical Response

The component for medical response and first aid would explain mandatory procedures for assisting employees when they become injured at a construction site. The policy would be structured in significant detail as it is extraordinarily important for maintaining workplace health and safety, and would specifically detail the appropriate staff people who need to be notified of instances of workplace injury.

In order to provide additional protections to employees, several miscellaneous components would be included after the medical response and first aid policies. The construction company would benefit from possessing policies regarding fall protection, short and long term disability, and leave of absences for employees who may need time away from construction in order to recover from injury or handle a life event.
