Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy Cast in ‘Super Mario Bros.” Animated Film

Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy are collaborating with a star-studded cast for an upcoming animated film starring “Super Mario” from the popular video game franchise.

According to the Hollywood Reporter and a YouTube video by Nintendo, the gaming company is teaming with Illumination and Universal in order to create the film; they have shared that Chris Pratt will have the leading role as the voice of Mario. Taylor-Joy will voice the part of Princess Peach. Charlie Day is set to voice the character of Luigi.

Other cast members include Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen-Donkey Kong, Sebastian Maniscalco-Spike, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong.

The plotline for the film has yet to be released. Based on the video games, Princess Peach is always captured by Bowser and it is up to Mario and Luigi to save the day. It’s likely that the film will have a similar plotline, but there is a possibility that they could create something in an entirely different direction.

“Mario and Luigi are two of the most beloved heroes in all of popular culture, and we are honored to have the unique opportunity to work so closely with Shigeru Miyamoto [the video game’s designer] and the widely imaginative team at Nintendo to bring these characters to life in an animated movie, unlike any film Illumination has made to date,” Illumination CEO Christopher Meledandri told Variety.

Super Mario Bros. is expected to release Dec. 21, 2022 in North America.
