August 1st marks the birthday of one of the greatest rock icons in history, Jerry Garcia the frontman of The Grateful Dead would have turned 78-years-old on this day.
To honor Garcia’s legacy; Relix, the music magazine YouTube channel and the site Fans.com are streaming bands on the ‘Rock My Soul: A Jerry Garcia Birthday Celebration’ that was filmed live in previous years; performing the hits of the timeless band, The Grateful Dead.
The YouTube video kicks off the show with Capitol Theatre and Brooklyn Bowl owner, Peter Shapiro speaking about the Rex Foundation; created by members of The Grateful Dead and Friends that was established as a charitable organization in 1983 to proactively provide extensive community support to creative endeavors in the arts, science, and education.
The various performances are former members of the Dead or bands and fans influenced by the Dead, including Phil Lesh and Friends performing The Dead song, Sugaree, (Phil Lesh is a former member of The Grateful Dead) Phil Moe featuring Bob Weir performing Sugar Magnolia, Scarlet Begonias, Sunshine Daydream (another former member of the Grateful Dead), Alex Coford performing Jerry’s song High Time, Billy Strings Wharf Rat, filmed live at Jerry Garcia’s favorite venue, The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY earlier this year, LockN Fest, The Brooklyn Bowl and other live venues pre-Covid-19 era.
