After the massive success of Barbie last summer—starring Honduran-American actress and advocate America Ferrera—we are getting a new film adaptation of a popular toy brand starring another powerful Latina. Brazilian American actress Camila Mendes (Upgraded) is set to play Teela in the live action adaptation of Masters of the Universe by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, Deadline reported. Teela is a warrior and captain of Prince Adam of Eternia’s Royal Guard, making her responsible for protecting the royal family and Prince Adam, who transforms into He-Man, played by Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You).
Mendes reacted to the news of her casting as Teela on Instagram with a screenshot of the Deadline article, thanking the production companies and director Travis Knight in her caption: “stoked to get yoked 💪🏽 still can’t believe this is real….thank you @amazonmgmstudios @mattel and travis knight for believing in me as your teela 🥹 let’s go to eternia!!!”
The Masters of the Universe was first introduced in 1982 following the release of their popular action figures. The toy line soon spurred the animated series entitled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe running from 1983-1985. The series went on to become one of the earliest children’s programs to be syndicated on television during its run. It centered on He-Man who is imbued with superhuman strength and power because of a Power Sword and his allies, including Teela, defend the planet from Skeletor and his armies. Teela is the adopted daughter of Man-at-Arms, the royal family’s inventor of weapons and can potentially become his love interest.
The 30-year-old actress is best known for her role as Veronica Lodge in the CW series Riverdale, which ran for seven seasons from 2017-2023. Since her breakout role, she has moved her way up to leading roles in a number of films including Netflix’s teen comedy Do Revenge and Prime’s Upgraded. She most recently starred in another Amazon MGM film, the romantic comedy, Música, which centered on Brazilian characters.
While the film’s plot is still under wraps, it is being produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films and is to be released exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026.
