BTS’ RM: Emerging Patron of the Arts

Pop superstar RM was recently interviewed by The New York Times and he explained how art inspires him and what types of works are in his collection.

In addition to the music he’s created with BTS, RM has amassed a significant art collection over the last three years. He showcased a terra cotta sculpture of a horse by Korean artist Kwon Jin-kyu at the Seoul Museum of Art. He also donated $84,000 to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. As he continues to travel with the boyband, RM likes to visit art museums while he’s on tour.

RM was inspired by a 2018 visit to the Art Institute of Chicago where he viewed paintings by Seurat and Monet. He said it “was almost like Stendhal syndrome,” a term used for when art invokes a physical reaction.

Referring to the artists whose work he’s collected-“I was able to feel their kind of sweat and blood,” RM expressed, “human beings that were trying to present their artworks in the world.”

As for inspiration-“I feel like they’re watching me,” he said. “I’m motivated. I want to be a better person, a better adult, because there is this aura that is coming from these artworks on display.”
