Broadway Grosses Analysis: The Wiz Revival Among Top 5 Highest-Grossing Shows
Grosses for the 26 Broadway productions were up slightly for the week ending August 11.
The Schele Williams-directed revival of The Wiz may not have picked up any Tony nominations this past season, but the current production of the William F. Brown-Charlie Smalls musical enjoyed another good week on Broadway, taking in $1,683,439 at the box office.
That figure landed the production at the Marquis Theatre in the top five highest-grossing productions of the week, following Wicked ($2,226,851), The Lion King ($2,136,377), and Hamilton ($1,957,871) and preceding Aladdin ($1,594,520). The Disney favorite The Lion King, it should be noted, played its August 11 evening performance to an audience that was fully comped.
In its final week on Broadway, the dance musical Illinoise played to over 98% capacity audiences, bringing in $1,167,159, up nearly $300,000 from the week before. There were 15 productions, in fact, that brought in over $1 million for the week ending August 11.
Overall, the 26 Broadway productions brought in a total of $30,768,450, up less than 1% from the week prior. Attendance also increased by 1.36%, from 239,326 theatregoers to 249,572 attendees, who paid an average ticket price of $126.84.
These numbers are likely to increase dramatically as a slew of eagerly awaited plays and musicals begin to open in the new season. In fact, the Sutton Foster-led revival of Once Upon a Mattress opened August 12. Next up is the Jen Silverman comedy The Roommate, starring Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow, opening September 12 at the Booth following previews that begin August 29.
