Jenna Ortega Talks About ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel

Before the film’s premiere, the 21-year-old spoke with Vanity Fair about her “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” character, Astrid, whom she described as “weird, but in a different way and not in the way you’d assume, I would say.”

“The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important,” she said of her character’s relationship with Winona Ryder’s character. “And it’s also really strange because it’s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what’s gone on in Lydia’s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.”

Ortega sat down with Vanity Fair where she talked about the upcoming film, claiming that she “feels like studios nowadays want people in seats” and so they “do reboots or sequels or things like that to get people entwined.”

But bringing back “Beetlejuice” and “all of the stories is so good because people need to revisit weird, strange, off-putting stories again,” she added. “We need to introduce the younger generation that’s always on the phone to new artistic and creative ideas. The weirder you get with it, the more people you can get to see it, I think will probably do a lot for film in general.”

Winona Ryder Talks Return To The Movie Industry

In a recent interview with Esquire U.K., Ryder discussed how “difficult experiences” on set altered her outlook on the industry.

The Academy Award-nominated actress was arrested in December 2001 for stealing $5,500 worth of clothing from a Beverly Hills store. She shared with the outlet that the arrest “definitely had a giant effect” on her career and was a key factor in her decision to step away from the industry.

“It’s so funny, because there’s so much lore around that story, but it really couldn’t have been more of me thinking I’m going to my car to get something,” Ryder said. “I just remember being told I was going to go to prison. I was like, ‘Huh? What are you talking about?’”

She also revealed that she “had a couple of difficult experiences with a couple of people who were just blatantly sexually harassing” her. “And then it happened again in my 30s. It wasn’t an assault. But it was incredibly inappropriate. It was wild,” she told the outlet. “I was lucky because I was known, so it didn’t happen as much as maybe it would if I had been a struggling actor.”
