Adam Lambert “Whataya Want from Me” Song Review

In the wake of Adam Lambert’s new album, High Drama-which is set to be released on Feb. 24, many fans are listening to his recordings in order to prepare for all the new tracks. Lambert appeared on season eight of American Idol and finished the competition as the runner-up. Ever since, he has been a pop/rock star with several songs and albums doing well on the music charts all over the world.

It all started with his first single “Whataya Want from Me” on his debut record entitled For Your Entertainment. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. One interesting fact about the track is that it was originally written by/for Pink, and she was set to record it for her fifth studio album-Funhouse. “Whataya Want from Me” did not make the final cut on Pink’s album, but after Lambert performed and recorded it, he took the song to a new level and created sounds that his fanbase appreciates.

Lyrics

Hey, slow it down
Whataya want from me
Whataya want from me
Yeah, I’m afraid
Whataya want from me
Whataya want from me

The song’s character is afraid to have a committed relationship. Things seem to move very quickly for him. He is also terrified of the road he and his partner are going through. The character thinks that his partner may have ulterior motives.

There might have been a time when I would give myself away
Oh, once upon a time I didn’t give a damn
But now, here we are
So whataya want from me
Whataya want from me

The character used to “go with the flow,” He was willing to participate in whatever activities his partner wanted. However, he gets to the point where he transforms from someone who really doesn’t give “damn” into a person who sets boundaries and becomes more willing to consider his feelings and emotions within the relationship going forward.

Just don’t give up, I’m workin’ it out
Please don’t give in, I won’t let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me
Whataya want from me
Whataya want from me

The character does not want to stop the relationship, he needs time in order to figure out if what they have together can be repaired.  He wants to have self-reflection and clarity from his partner that their hearts can have the union they are both seeking.

Vocals

Adam Lambert is one of the best singers in popular music. It is amazing how his voice sounds excellent on pop, rock and tracks that combine the two. His vocals were amazing even when he was a contestant on American Idol. However, he is one of those artists who continues to better his craft over time, he is probably a better singer now than he was when he first got started.

Instrumentation

“Whataya Want from Me” is based in live drum and guitar. This was a welcomed musical foundation for pop radio at the time because many of his contemporaries were using drum machines in place of live instruments.

Performance

“Whataya Want from Me” is Lambert’s most popular song. He performs it nearly every time he does a concert, including when he goes on tour.
