A Small Light on Disney+

The story of Anne Frank and her family should continually be told and retold so their plight is never forgotten and the younger generations understand the holocaust and why war needs to be avoided at all costs.

A Small Light on Disney+ does precisely that, outlining the desperation of the Jewish population in Europe during WWII, but the narrative is from the perspective of someone who was desperately trying to help in any way she could.

Miep Gies (Bel Powley) continued to help the Frank family as they hid in Amsterdam throughout the war, hoping to stay hiding until the end. Miep every day risked her life getting supplies for the family as they hid, constantly in fear they would be found out and instantly deported to a concentration camp.

A Small Light is from the perspective of Miep Gies, her life story, and her background. We understand why she did what she did when helping the Franks and why it was so important to stand up against what was wrong. She was a powerful woman who did everything she physically could help the Jewish population at a time when a lot of people turned their backs.

One aspect hinted at but not focused on is the ongoing threat of being found out and reported to the Nazis. Throughout the story, there is an underlying tension, as you hope the Franks are never found out and they survive the war. Still, unfortunately for those who know Frank’s story and many others, there is the dread and horror of what the future has for these poor unfortunate individuals.

Created by Ben Esler, A Small Light highlights the life of Miep Gies, who risked everything and devoted almost all of her time throughout WWII to stop the persecution of innocent individuals who were being discriminated against under the false ideology of the Nazi rhetoric.

Directed by Susana Fogel, this eight-part series is beautifully made with astounding accuracy dedicated to the costumes and sets. When watching a period drama, you can’t help but be transported away and swept up with the story. The sets and costumes help maintain the importance of Miep’s story and recreating history and letting the tragedies of war slowly unfold in front of your eyes.

Bel Powley as Miep Gies is truly astounding in the role. You might remember Bel from The Morning Show and the breakout role that caught the attention of many playing a young Princess Margaret in A Royal Night Out. Bel has gone strength to strength and knocked it out of the park with her portrayal of Miep. Powley has tremendous talent.

History has a habit of repeating itself, and it is essential to remember why the idea of hate should never be entertained. Throughout history, there have been pivotal moments where atrocities could have been avoided, and the hate and unfounded ridicule

A Small Light is a series that everyone should take the time to watch, and it is currently available on Disney+.
